What Is Rehmannia?

If you’ve taken a look at some of the ingredients in our liver antioxidant elixir, you may well have noticed that we’ve included rehmannia in it, a wild herb that you may also hear referred to as Chinese foxglove on occasion.

We’ve created a truly unique formula with de-liver-ance, combining molecular biology with natural herbs, roots and extracts, all of which have been used in traditional herbal medicine for more than 5,000 years.

According to the Healthline website, it’s believed by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine that this particular wild herb can balance the yin and, as such, it is used to treat those conditions thought to be caused by a yin deficiency, such as allergies, anaemia, diabetes, fever, eczema, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis and so on.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the path to good health is paved by maintaining the balance between the yin and the yang - the two opposing forces in your body - and ill health occurs when one or both are out of balance. It also takes into consideration energy flow and the five elements of earth, metal, fire, wood and water.

It’s common for remedies to include a combination of different herbs and rehmannia is one that is often used to help treat various conditions.

The plant itself can be used in cooking, as well, so if you’re keen to really give yourself a bit of a health boost, why not try including it in some new dishes this week? It’s relatively sweet to taste but delivers a warmth to food, so would do well in stir fries alongside the likes of ginger and galangal.

You can also use it to make your own tea, so why not stick the kettle on and sit down with a freshly brewed up in front of the TV to really wind down after work? You might be surprised at how good you feel afterwards.

Or what about whipping up a big batch of sibut soup? This is a very popular Chinese herbal soup that typically features rehmannia, chuanxiong, codonopsis root and angelica root. Rehmannia will make your soup taste quite sweet so you might want to use it sparingly, so as not to affect the overall dish.
