6 Signs You May Be Drinking Too Much
Life can be hard, something that 2020 has proven all too successfully, you might say, so it’s no surprise if after a tricky week you might find yourself reaching for a glass (or bottle) of wine. On the odd occasion, there’s certainly no harm in this but you do need to be mindful of how much you’re drinking and how often, as it’s all too easy for it to spiral out of control.
There are subtle little signs you can look out for that could be an indication that you have a burgeoning problem on your hands, one that may need nipping in the bud before it becomes more difficult to address.
For example, do you find yourself becoming defensive about the amount that you drink? If someone you know, a friend or family member, suggests that you may want to think about taking it easy from time to time and your immediate reaction is to feel hurt or offended, perhaps it’s time to ask yourself why you feel like this.
Another sign of potentially problematic drinking is feeling worried about how much you’re drinking yourself. If you’ve started questioning how much alcohol you’re drinking each week, start listening to yourself. You wouldn’t be worried about it for no reason, after all. Try to cut back and see how you feel then.
Using alcohol as a coping mechanism is very common and not something to be ashamed of but if your thoughts immediately turn to a drink if something bad happens at work or home, or if you want to have a drink to celebrate as soon as you receive good news, it’s possible that this could turn into something of a problem later down the line, as well.
Physically, if you find yourself falling ill quite often, it could be down to the amount you’re drinking, as alcohol can weaken the immune system, which will make you more susceptible to bugs.
With coronavirus floating around, you certainly want to try and keep yourself as healthy as possible, so maybe now’s a good time to review your alcohol intake and cut down if you can.
Also think about your motivation levels - do you feel as though they’ve dipped somewhat in the last few months? Alcohol and hangovers can take a real toll and if you find that you’re not getting as much done and are lazing around on the sofa more often, this could be indicative of a slight problem with drink.
And then, of course, there’s weight gain to consider, as well. If you suddenly find that your favourite pair of jeans are on the snug side and you know your diet is fine, it could be down to all those sugary alcoholic drinks you’ve been putting away. Certainly something else to keep an eye on, that’s for sure.
