5 Ways To Love Your Liver & Keep It Healthy

The liver is one of the most important organs in the human body and has all sorts of functions, breaking down certain substances, converting glycogen to glucose and cleaning your blood, removing toxins from the bloodstream and making them less harmful.

Given that it has all these important functions (and many more!), it’s important that you do all you can to keep your liver as healthy as you possibly can… and the good news is that there’s a lot you can do where your lifestyle is concerned to help protect this vital organ and keep you in ship shape condition. 

Firstly, you would be wise to keep your weight in check if you can. If you’re overweight or obese, you could end up with a fatty liver, which can then lead on to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Lose some weight and you’ll be able to reduce your liver fat, which your body will certainly thank you for.

It’s not just the amount of food you eat but the type you consume that can help give your liver a boost. 

Try to follow a balanced diet with plenty of fibre from fresh fruit and veg, wholegrain and pulses, as well as meat (limiting the amount of red meat) and good fats that you can find in nuts, seeds and fish. And make sure that you stay properly hydrated throughout the day.

Of course, while it seems that drinking coffee can help prevent liver disease and can even apparently help people who already have some signs of liver damage, it’s important to make sure that you follow a balanced diet, reduce your alcohol intake, drink lots of water, maintain a healthy weight and take regular exercise to properly protect your liver.
